Overview

Crimson-fronted Parakeet: Large green parakeet with red forehead and red patch on underwing that is prominent in flight and shows up on leading edge of wing on perched birds. Tail is long and slender. Sexes similar. Juvenile lacks red patches and underwing is more orange than red.

Range and Habitat

Crimson-fronted Parakeet: Mainly found in Costa Rica with some ranging to Nicaragua and Panama. Found in open areas at lower elevations throughout the Caribbean slope but spreading onto the southern Pacific coast and Valle Central as forests are cut.

Crimson-fronted Parakeet

Crimson-fronted Parakeet: Large green parakeet with red forehead and red patch on underwing that is prominent in flight and shows up on leading edge of wing on perched birds. Tail is long and slender. Sexes similar. Juvenile lacks red patches and underwing is more orange than red.

● Song: "kih-kih-kih"

● Foraging & Feeding: Crimson-fronted Parakeet: Fly in large noisy flocks that roam widely in search of seeds and nuts, will also eat flowers and fruits.

● Breeding & nesting: Crimson-fronted Parakeet: Lay 2 to 4 white eggs in a various kinds of holes and cavitites, often in decayed wood or old woodpecker nests, but also in tangled vines. May nest communally. Female incubates eggs while male brings her food. Nests during the dry season, roughly January to April.

● Similar species: Crimson-fronted Parakeet: The Red-fronted Parrotlet is colored very similarly but is a much smalller bird and has a short squared tail.
