Overview

Emerald Toucanet: Small, short-billed toucan with green body, blue face, and red banded tail. Bill is black with prominent yellow stripe and red patch. Sexes similar. Juvenile has duller, paler colors, and bill is dark gray.

Range and Habitat

Emerald Toucanet: Found from southern Mexico to Venezuela. Common at middle elevations throughout Costa Rica.

Emerald Toucanet

Emerald Toucanet: Small, short-billed toucan with green body, blue face, and red banded tail. Bill is black with prominent yellow stripe and red patch. Sexes similar. Juvenile has duller, paler colors, and bill is dark gray.

● Song: "arrh arrh arrh"

● Foraging & Feeding: Emerald Toucanet: Moves through the upper canopy in loose flocks of 5 to 10 birds. Very active and nervous as they watch for predators and search for fruit, insects, and small vertebrates.

● Breeding & nesting: Emerald Toucanet: Lays 3 to 4 white eggs in tree cavities or old woodpecker nests from 7 to 90 feet up. Breeding season March to July, usually having 2 broods. Both parents incubate eggs for 16 days. Young leave the nest when 40 days old.
