Overview

Golden-olive Woodpecker: Medium-sized woodpecker with bright olive-yellow body, plain above and banded dark below. Paler head has black central crown stripe bordered by red stripes and red check stripe. Female only has red on the nape. Juvenile of each sex is more duller marked than the adult with heavier markings on their underparts and less brightly marked red.

Range and Habitat

Golden-olive Woodpecker: Occurs from northern Mexico to Peru and Argentina. In Costa Rica found in middle elevation forests throughout the country. Uses a range of forest type from primary forest to second growth and gardens or plantations.

Golden-olive Woodpecker: Medium-sized woodpecker with bright olive-yellow body, plain above and banded dark below. ● Foraging & Feeding: Golden-olive Woodpecker: Remains high and well hidden in the forest canopy as it searches for insects and insects larvae on tree trunks and amid vegetation. Occasionally descends to low stumps along forest edges.

● Breeding & nesting: Golden-olive Woodpecker: Excavates a cavity in tree or stump as high as 60 feet above ground. Lays 2 to 4 white eggs in February through May that are incubated by both parents. Juveniles begin flying when about 24 days old.

● Similar species: Golden-olive Woodpecker: Rufous-winged Woodpecker has dark green face and red in wing. Red-rumped Woodpecker is smaller, has overall brown color and red rump.
