Hoffmann's Woodpecker: Medium-sized woodpecker with boldly barred back, yellow nape, and red cap. Underparts are pale gray-brown with yellow smudge in the center. Female lacks red cap. Range and Habitat

Hoffmann's Woodpecker: Has a limited range from southern Honduras to Costa Rica. In Costa Rica found on Pacific and Caribbean slopes in northern half of country. Range may be expanding as forests are cut.

Hoffmann's Woodpecker

Hoffmann's Woodpecker: Medium-sized woodpecker with boldly barred back, yellow nape, and red cap. Underparts are pale gray-brown with yellow smudge in the center. Female lacks red cap. Juvenile of each sex like the adult but upperparts more obscurely barred and rest of body darker with dark mottling on the flanks and belly. Hoffmann's Woodpecker:

● Song: "di-di-di-di"

● Foraging & Feeding: Hoffmann's Woodpecker: Actively forages on tree trunks and branches at all heights and in many types of forest, pecks into decaying wood or flakes off pieces of bark. Eats insects and larvae, fruits, and the nectar of many flowers.

● Breeding & nesting: Hoffmann's Woodpecker: Digs cavity in tree trunks at fairly low heights, rarely up to 30 feet high. Lays 2 to 3 white eggs from February to June, and may raise 2 clutches of eggs during this time.

● Similar species: Hoffmann's Woodpecker: Red-crowned Woodpecker is very similar but has red or orange nape and red patch on belly. The Black-checked Woodpecker is darker and has a conspicuous black mask.
