Overview

Three-wattled Bellbird: Large heavy cotinga with snowy white head and shoulders contrasting sharply with bright red-brown body. Males have three long wormlike appendages at base of bill. Female is uniformly yellow-green with dull streaked underparts. Juvenile resembles female but streaking is more indistinct.

Range and Habitat

Three-wattled Bellbird: Found from Honduras to Panama, but there is apparently only one small population that migrates in a loop back and forth. Many apparently travel down the west slope of Costa Rica in one season then back up the Caribbean slope after a stop in Panama. Prefers intact mountain forest habitats.

● Foraging & Feeding: Three-wattled Bellbird: Spends most of its time in the middle to upper levels of the forest canopy searching for fruits of the Lauraceae (Avocado) Family.

● Breeding & nesting: Three-wattled Bellbird: The bell-like calls of breeding males are world famous because they are so loud they knock their rivals off their perches. Male's three wattles extend up to 5 inches long to accentuate their appearance. Nesting behavior is poorly known. Five nests that were found in recent years were made of twigs placed in haning vines about 25 feet high, but few other details described.
